The kids, Duane and I were in the need for a mini vacation (something that only last Saturday & Sunday), so we decided to head down to Indian Rocks Beach which is on the Gulf Side of Florida, south of Clearwater and North of Saint Pete. We headed down Saturday morning around 8:00 and it took us about and hour and a half to get there. We found a Howard Johnson that had a reasonable rate about 15 minutes away from the beach. We unpacked and headed out to eat. We found ourselves at the Pub Waterfront Restaurant located at 20025 Gulf Blvd. Indian Shores, FL 33785. The food was amazing and very fresh and the restaurant overlooked the inlet and was very peaceful. Right next to the Pub was Island Marine Rentals that had scooters for rent and we were so in. We rented two scooters for the day (my first time, and I was a little nervous). Duane and Cody rode on one and Jasmine and I rode on the other. The price was reasonable for a 4 hour rental and the deposit (though a little steep) was returned when the scooters were brought back. We LOVED it!! We scootered all around and went all the way down to Treasure Island. On the way back we stopped at John's pass boardwalk and had an ice cream and walked around. There were tons of shops and restaurants and a huge pirate ship. We determined that we would go on the Pirate ship ride the next time we were in town. We leisurely strolled back to drop the scooters off and headed back to the hotel to get rested and changed for dinner.
The following day we decided to head off to the beach for a morning of fun in the sun before heading back to reality. Public parking for Indian Rocks Beach is free except at 17th street (this is where the bathrooms are). When we arrived the beach was deserted, which was great. We set up our canopy and beach chairs and just enjoyed our time with each other. The beach itself is beautiful with the white sandy beaches that don't hurt when you walk on them. You can bring a kayak and venture around the ocean or just a ball or frisbee to throw around with the kids.
This is not as well known as some of the other beaches in the area so it seems a lot more laid back and natural. I would definitely recommend this area if you are looking for a beach to go to without having to deal with tons of people.
